54 - after cataract surgery in 1997

Acuity
(R): 20/300. (L): 20/50

Treatment
Antioxidant vitamins + lutein. Do everything known to protect retinas. Use Amsler grid.

Prognosis or Current State of Vision
First visit to RS in June, 2006. He said I was "a very impressive lady" with a significant amount of drusen and put me on quarterly visits. Also, put my name on the list for possible future "study". Use distance lenses for driving, bifocals for reading and RX for working on computer.

Family History
No known eye diseases in immediate family. Dad died at 85, Mom at 99. Both had cataract surgery/lens implants in their 80's.

Impact on My Life
The impact is emotional at this point, and so far, my activities haven't been curtailed.

Positive Effects
More acutely aware of the spectacular beauty around me. I appreciate how truly blessed we are!

Adaptations
No special ones yet. I do use proper lighting, wear sunglasses (orange & amber) and protect my eyes in every possible way.

Employment
Retired after 35 years as a secretary. For the last 10 years, full time caregiver for elderly mother until her death in 2005 at age 99.

More About Me
I have been married to Ken for 3 years and live on 10 acres in Central Texas. I have one daughter and an 8 y/o granddaughter. I'm a master gardener and am busy with many aspects of gardening. I also enjoy music, dancing, cooking, antiquing, traveling, raising exotic finches and finding bargains at garage sales!
